Unlock and Go: How to Start Your INFINITI with the Key

Learn how to unlock and start your INFINITI even with a dead key fob battery. Follow these steps to quickly be up and running.

Your trusted key fob and push start are excellent everyday companions for conveniently starting your vehicle. However, if your key fob gets damaged or the battery dies, you may scramble to start your car.

Why Your INFINITI Key Fob Might Not Be Working

The most common issue that affects your key fob functionality is a dead battery. All battery-powered devices eventually run out of power, including your INFINITI Intelligent Key.

Changing the battery may be a simple solution, but you won’t always have a spare battery ready or a shop nearby. However, you can still unlock and start your INFINITI, even with a dead key fob.

How To Start Your INFINITI With a Mechanical Key

When your key fob battery is dead, the mechanical key becomes your savior. It allows you to unlock your car, and the fob can still be used to start your vehicle.

Unlocking Your INFINITI With a Mechanical Key

Your INFINITI Intelligent Key has a mechanical key hidden inside. In a rare instance when the battery in your INFINITI Intelligent Key is dead, you can use this key to unlock the doors and enter the vehicle.

Follow these steps to use your mechanical key:

  1. Look for a small tab at the back of the INFINITI key fob.
  2. Release the tab to access the key.
  3. Pull out the mechanical key.
  4. Use the mechanical key to unlock the car’s doors.

You can also lock/unlock the glove box and trunk pass-through lid (if equipped with a cylinder) using the mechanical key.

Your INFINITI may activate the alarm once you unlock your door with the key. Usually, you’d turn off the alarm by pushing the UNLOCK button on your key fob. However, since it’s out of power, you can turn off the alarm by touching the ignition switch with the Intelligent Key.

How to Start INFINITI Without Key Fob Battery Working

Your INFINITI key fob can still start your vehicle, even if the battery isn’t working. All you need to do is:

  1. Move the shift lever to the P (Park) position.
  2. Press the foot brake.
  3. Touch the ignition switch with your INFINITI Intelligent Key. This will cause a chime sound.
  4. Push the ignition switch while depressing the brake pedal within 10 seconds after the chime sound.
  5. Your engine will start.

For some INFINITI models, like the QX70, you should insert the Intelligent Key into the Intelligent Key port to start the engine.

You can also consider installing the INFINITI Virtual Key with supported vehicles. It allows you to use an app on your compatible smart device to lock/unlock and start your INFINITI without a key.

Other Reasons Why Your Intelligent Key Might Malfunction

While a low or completely drained key fob battery is the most common reason for your INFINITI remote start not working, other factors could be involved. If your key fob is damaged, replacing the battery won’t help.

Wetting, dropping, or exposing your key fob to extremely high and low temperatures can damage it. For example, accidentally washing your INFINITI key in a washing machine or placing it in an environment above 140°F temperature for an extended period can damage its internal components.

Ed Hicks INFINITI auto service is here to diagnose and repair your vehicle, whatever the issue may be, including programming a new key fob.
